Stories Are Magic

Retired Evil Mastermind

I liken myself to a sorcerer of stories rather than a wizard of words. The difference being how the magic is made and directed, even though the impact might seem the same to the rest of the world. I’ve been manifesting worlds and conjuring characters since childhood, enthralling minds with what might be – unlocking doors to dimensions of fantasy.

School dispelled my illiteracy, but honestly I was terrible at reading for a number of reasons. I couldn’t transport myself with the words on the page, I was stuck in my seat memorizing and acquiring an unintended perspective. My adventurer’s guild was a table in a basement with friends, and while I often functioned as the director of our word plays, I embraced the opportunity to act. Imagination and creativity never left my mind, but it took time and experience to convey interesting and engaging stories where every character had agency.

What little higher education I pursued was for the purpose of better understanding my fellow humans. Perhaps trying to write a novel in high school and testing in the top percentage during English exams demonstrated my capacity to wield words proficiently, but I wasn’t enamoured by the process. Consonants are sand, vowels are clay, and words are bricks, making language a foundation of communication, although not the only one. A story can be told in a look, an embrace, or a variety of other mediums such as music or pictures. My art just so happens to rely upon words.

I appreciate a good story whenever and wherever I find it, but I personally don’t go looking between the covers of a book primarily. A dangerous admission for an author, but it is the truth. My favorite theatre of the mind remains the communal space between friends united in a shared experience, role-playing characters entrusted with pursuing their own interests and objectives. I could ramble on about the benefits I see in the medium, but that is a story for another day. Words convey thought, some carry borrowed emotion or primal impulses, and we should all be mindful of the magic we wield.

I hope that you choose to use your power for good, or at least without the intent to harm. I’m still learning my craft and refining my art, but I’m not here to demonstrate mastery or dominance.

I live for love, tell stories to entertain and hopefully empower. I don’t always accurately anticipate the outcome of mystical transmission, so feedback is welcome.
